Baseball, track and field highlight Culver Centaur sports weekend

The Culver City high school sports weekend starts today (Thursday) when the boys and girls track and field teams battle El Segundo at home inside the Jerry Chabola Stadium at 3 p.m.  The Centaurs are hoping to continue their dominance on the track against the Eagles after their win over Hawthorne last week.

All four track and field teams, varsity boys and girls and boys and girls freshmen and sophomores, will try to beat a very good El Segundo team.  “We are looking forward to the challenge,” said head coach Jahmal Wright on Tuesday after practice.  “Our coaching staff has done a wonderful job preparing our student athletes. I would like to say once again that we have a great coaching staff. We have a mixture of young and older coaches that create an outstanding environment for our athletes.”

The beat goes on for the track and field teams when they travel to Mira Costa to compete in the Mustang Relays on Saturday.  The always competitive meet will start at 9 a.m. and will feature some of the top high school track and field talent in Southern California.  “The Mustang Relays is a great meet for Culver City to showcase our track and field athletes,” said girls’ head coach Rayfield M. Beaton.  “We are young but we still expect our kids to perform at a high level.”

The 2-3-1 varsity baseball team will face South Torrance on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the Culver City campus. They travel to Lawndale to open Ocean league play on Tuesday, March 21, at 3 p.m.

The girls’ lacrosse team is currently 4-1 and 1-0 in league play after they beat Mira Costa 11-8 last Monday. On Friday they host Downey at 4 p.m., and on Wednesday, March 22, they travel to Santa Monica for a 4 p.m. match against the Vikings.

The boys’ lacrosse team is currently 3-3 and plays their next two home games against Santa Monica on Wednesday, March 22, and they face Peninsula on Thursday, March 23.  Both games will start at 5 p.m.
